Saving...
two or three times to take on men that were running there as hard as they could go with their guns in their hand. when we had got about [of?] half way there we met acouple of horsemen coming full speed for help they told us for god sake to hurry up that the union men were almost surrounded. that there was about twelve or fifteen hundred secessionists and only about three hundred union men they said that the union men were retreating towards us. and that they were closely folowed by the secessionists. they told us to keep asrict lookout and see that the track was not torn up any place and then they pushed ahead to Keokuk for more help. it began to look to some of them like we were running into rather atight place. the officers got out the cartriges and passed them around amongst us and gave orders to load our guns there was but very few of us that ever saw acartrige before and under the circumstances it was alittle embarrassing to some them. however we got along very well
