Saving...
considering. there was one or two though that pushed their cartridges down without biting the end off and about as many more that bit the ends off and then put the ball end down and powder up after we got our guns loaded we waited patiently to see something to shoot at untill finaly we got to Croton which just across the river from Athens Croton is on the Iowa side of the river and Athens is on the Missouri side well when we got to Croton we found that we were alittle too late that the batle had been fought the secessionests whiped and the men returning victorious you had better believe they were glad to see us there. it was all confusion for awhile women and children crying men hollering and laughing and every fellow had something to say. we found things just about as them two men had told us that there was at least four secessionests to one union man there was about 20 secessionest taken prisoners and acording to their acount there was some 12 or 1500 of them and there was only about three hundred union men. we awhile and took dinner in Croton
