and such news as that dont go very far in the army. a soldier's or an officers word is not worth shucks any more We can tell though when Vicksburg surrenders without any body telling us Our big guns are kept going day and night and could be heard if we were twice as far away sometimse the firing is so rapid that it is impossible to count even the reports from the heaviest guns I have never been there to see them work yet. I have the promise of a pass to go there if we ever get back to Camp Some of our boys have been down there Anyone is allowed to take his gun and go sharp shooting after he gets there our front line of fortifications and that of the enemies are not more than ten steps apart in places and some of our Camps are not more than fifty yards distant. how long such a state of affairs can last is hard to tell.
