We camped that night within five miles of Holly Springs. Our pickets were fired into about midnight aslight skirmish ensued our assembly was sounded and we were in line of battle in double quick time, but hostilities ceased about as sudden as they commenced. there was nobody hurt, nor we were not disturbed again during the night. April 18th Marched in asouthern direction passing throug Holly Springs alittle before noon. on ahill about amile south of town three rebel cavalry were discovered watching our colums as we moved through town, afew miles farther they were discovered again in advance of us. Our officers being the only mounted man along made adash at them routering them without firing ashot. capturing amule tram loaded with bacon intended for their soldiers it was afterwards given out to us We marched about fourteen miles that day Camped at Lumkins Mills 9 miles south of Holly Springs and about six miles north of the Tallehatchie.
