the Ohio and Mobile R.R. at asmall town called Verona. Went east 6 or 7 miles to Coolawa Creek and Swamp. Found afew Confederates an Picket bridges burned so we could go no farther Turned back to Verona and west couple of miles took dinner Stayed till dark. During the afternoon several of the 2nd Iowas dressed in secesh clothes and armed with shot guns Captured along the road. Went to reconnoiter alarge Confederate force reported within afew miles moving on us. Started on after dark traveling west 10 or twelve miles Camped till morning. May 3rd Sunday left Camp about 7 Took the Grand Junction Road Marched about 26 miles Crossed Tallehatchie by fording at New Albany The bridge having been destroyed by the rebels Went into Camp about amile farther on.
