and played on the boat, together with buckets freely used, and kept it safe until we cut loose and drifted out in the stream. The flames blew right towards us and the buildings being just on the Edge of the bank, not over 15 rods off, made it so hot that I couldnt bear my hand on the boards that plank up the bow end nor stand on the roof at the Edge next the shore. but we got off safe and were picked up by two steam boats and towed to shore. the buildings were filled with Negroes and I hear that some 8 or 10 were burned up in them. who were sick at the time, and couldnt be moved fast Enough. Well the news is still good. Morgan Captured. his force destroyed, and down here the Rebs give it up that they have no show at all. while in the East things dont look bad. Still not quite so good as I could wish. I hear that you have had a time in DeWitt, that Buck has left. Sam Ely in jail and others with him etc, So [mote?] it be, with all d----d scoundrels and Copper headed traitors. Ill wait to finish & send this off till tomorrow morning & may be Ill have a letter, my own dear wife good bye for to-day on paper. Ill think of you often enough to satisfy you, if you were the veriest gourmand in the world.. Aug. 4--No Letter yet and I am disappointed
