Three things are essential to life. Air, water and food. Air is the first essential as we can live without water or food. Comp. of air. A mixture of two invisible gases, oxygen and nitrogen. Most Important Elements Foods consist of compounds formed chiefly from Carbon, Ocygen, hydrogen, and nitrogen with small quantities of other elements. Oxygen is an invisible odorless gas. It is a very active element, always ready to unite with other elements to form new compounds. The combining of oxygen with other elements is called oxidation. Oxygen forms about 1/5 vol. of air. 8/9 of weight of water, and 2/3 weight of the body.
