The American Consulate is in small, dingy Apartments, and is a disgrace to American. The Consul however is Mr. Hawthorne, who does us credit. He is a good looking elderly gentleman, with very urbane manners. - In my walk through the city I was struck with several things, - the narrow side walks - the unpainted, I might say never painted brick buildings, - the Cabs - and the Police. I should mention also the Carts - a load of themselves - drawn by large muscular horses. - The Cabs are of two kinds, both drawn by one horse, - the one resembling our Hacks, only somewhat smaller, the other similar in shape to a Gig, with a seat behind for the driver, who holds the reins over the top of the vehicle. All of these conveyances are painted with fancy colours, - many of them very light. A black Cab is not to be found, here. - The Police are a fine looking set of men. The Noticeable parts of their uniform are a silk Hat, with a glazed top, a single breasted dress
