Birmingham, being a manufacturing place, is rather a plain city, although many of it's retail stores present a fine appearance. The democratic element is powerful here, B. being one of the chief promoters of the passage of the reform bill of 183 . The chief buildings are the Town Hall, erected in , and the Free Grammer school, founded in the reign of Ed. VI. The present edifice was erected in St. Phillips is the finest looking church, but St. Martins is the most interesting from its age It is situated near the Bullring, -built-in Sunday June 8th, 1856. Heard Rev. J. E. Miller preach an excellent sermon to children, this Afternoon, on the Text "Come over to Macedonia and help us" In the evening attended Divine Service at St. Phillips. Walked out to Egbaston, to-day in the suburbs, --the residence of the wealthier inhabitants. The houses of the Upper classes in England, usually have the grounds about them encompassed with a Wall, which is hidden from view on the inside by hedges and by ivy.
