Poor man's sponge cake. One cup of Sugar, three eggs. Three table-spoonfuls of water. Three cups of flour. One teaspoonful of cream of tartar. 1/2 teaspoonful of soda. Chocolate cake. 2 cups of sugar. 1 cup of butter. 1 cup of milk. 3 1/2 cups of flour. 4 eggs. 1/2 teaspoonful of saleratus. 1 teaspoonful of cream of tartar. _"_ 1 cup of grated chocolate and 2 cups of brown sugar dissolved in [illegible] hot water then [illegible] [boiled four minutes?]; spred while warm
