Camphor as a sedative. One of the powers of Camphor, which is most important, is that of putting a stop to that fearful insomnolence which accompanies the incubation & first development of insanity. When opium, hyposcyamies, corium, stramonium, & "all the drowsy syrups of the East," fail to produce any effect, a grain of camphor , formed into a pill, & followed by a draught of an ounce & a half infusion of hops, mixed with 5 drops sulphuric ether, is the best remedy for procuring sleep. To clean straw Dissolve 1 oz oxalic acid in 1 qt water, if the straw is very dirty, add a little more acid. Apply with a nail brush, & leave the bonnet to dry, & it will be found to have regained it former stiffness & freshness. Bishop Payne's recipe for Rheumatism, 1 pt best French brandy, 2 oz laudanum, 2 of hartshorn, 2 of camphor, 2 oz castile soap, 1 gill spts Turpentine, Rub before the fire, before going to bed.
