229 High ground, the approaches to it being rendered almost impassable by slashed Timber, Abattis, Earth works & even solid masonry. The Rebel batteries opened on us. our Replied and Heavy artillery firing more or less untill night. 5 of the 12" Iowa being wounded & about 40 of the 1st Division of 16" Corps . Our Division [straped?] for a charge. but no charge was ordered, it being deemed best to lay siege to the Place. Rain tonight (Vertically, at left:-) [Adj?] C.Davis of Co C was wounded by a shell to day Sergt. Woods & F Comstock being [struck?] but [shaken?] not broken
