251 left to defend & cover the Retreat of the Garrison. I looked over the Forts with daylight this morning and found it of great streanth. I was satisfied of the fact that the Torpedoes was planted all along in front of the abattis for I saw them at Regular distances and in such a position that our men must have exploded them in passing the abattis. Considerable supplies and munitons of war fell into our hands, with all the fixed artillery. some
