58 Selma Ala Aug 31st 1865 Thursday Detailed Officer of Provost Guard and as this is Election day a rough time was anticipated so I prepared my self by going well armed. But was hapily disapointed for the day passed of very quietly, and onely two or three fights amongst the Citizens where they done up in a quiet & private manner so that the interference of the Military was not needed. Mr. Nimmo Special U. S. Cotton Agent was shot & instantly killed (Vertically, at left:-) Maney men Sick with fever. Malaria & diarrohea
