45 Water ford Miss August 26th. 1864 Friday The march was resumed this morning our Division in advance. and when within one mile of Holly Springs the Citizens learning of our advance pettioned Gen Smith that the 12th. Iowa be provost Guard while we Remained Here, which Request was granted, so we marched in and took possession of the City to the great delight of the Citizens. But the advance Cavalry and our Brigade of Infantry had pillaged many of the Houses before we came up, & the Court House was fired by the straglers who were confined there
