55 Steamer Mattie White River Arkansas Sept 5th. 1864 Monday Lay up last night, and at day light the flag ship, Darling started the others following we Reached St Charles City Arkansas at night, and Disembarked, the distance from the mouth to this place is 100 miles & for the entire distance of did not see one solitary Habitation & only 2 men on the shore, one of whom was Dead & washed on shore and seemed to be a Federal soldier. no effort was made to Recover the Body. The wreck of the Mound City Can be seen in the River when it was blown up at the time of the Capture of the place. Very Hot.
