96 Steamer Empire City Mo River October 15th. 1864 Saturday Our Fleet of Boats have lain up every night since we entered the River. on account of Dificult navigation, This morning we had to Disembark again and march 3 miles across a Bend by Reason of a sand Bar which Cannot otherwise be Crossed, in passing through the farm of a Dutchman the Boys of the Regt Helped themselves to about 8 bushels of His potatoes. and on Complaint being made to the Colonel, He ordered all the Potatoes to be delivered up, and the quantity was ascertained the Colonel Stibbs paid the farmer & Issued the Potatoes to the Regt with strict orders to forage no more in this state under severe penalties. Reached Herman at 2 P.M.
