(214) To make a pepper cake like that which comes from beyond sea. Take a peck of meslin meale finely drest. put into the flower 2 ounces of Coriander seeds. 4 ounces of Caraway seeds 4 ounces of Anniseeds. & of Candid oring Lemon & citteran halfe a pound power into your meale 10 or 12 pound of Treakle wash out your pot with a gill of new ale & 6 or 7 spoonfulls of yest. then put in 4 ounces of bett ginger & work up your paist. with halfe a peck of wheat flower & make them into Cakes what largnesse you please. nick them & prick them at the top & send them to bake & when they are baked. rub them over the top with an Egg
