which is the sole object of his solicitations - I regret that is not in my power to have a personal conference with you on behalf of the poor fellow John Coombs as the distance is too great for me to return home in a Day. I must therefore be obliged to trouble you with this long tiresome Letter to solicit your kindness towards a most deserving Man and his wife raising three small children who are literally starving and aware of your philanthropic Disposition [illegible] I shall not wasted your time and patience in vain - I [illegible] that you now enjoy a good state of health and I am [illegible] to inform you that I am afflicted with a violent Rheumatic Complaint which prevents my enjoying the delightful air of this place as I could wish but thank God I am as well as I am.
