the reverse of the original, green where red was, red where green was. This supposes the ground on which the eye rests, when the pattern is removed is white. But now suppose instead of taking away the pattern, it is only slightly moved. Then, for the instant, part of the spectral pattern of the original red (for instance) overlaps the colour of the ground; and the spectral pattern of the ground in like manner overlaps the colour of the center, thus producing a confusion of colour at the whole edge of the pattern. A very amusing illustration of the property of complementary colours may be thus made on a paper about the twice the size of a sheet of note paper draw a rough figure Paint every part with bright colours complementary to what the colours ought to be as green cheeks, the white of the eye black a black cap, a red ribbon green, a green gown red and so on; a very black frame pattern round. Then lay this on the floor in a strong light, look for some time; then look up to the ceiling and in a minute you will see a spectral picture with all the colours right. This requires a little practice and some eyes see it better than others; young eyes best. [sketch of old lady with bonnet]
