in the centre, so as to bring the number again to 23. If this mode of making the button hole be thought too troublesome, when the number of rows for the depth of the button hole on the first side are worked, leave the ball of cotton with which you are working & with another commence the other side leaving a sufficient end to fasten off very firmly, & knit twice in the first stitch to make 12 like the other side, knit backwards & forwards one row less than on the first side, then knit across with the needle & cotton left a side to the other edge, taking in the stitch previously increased which will make them both equal as to rows: cut off the other cotton, leaving a good end to fasten off & continue knitting the whole 23 stitches till you come to the button hole at the opposite end. When the entire length of the brace is completed, the stitches must be knitted 2 together after taking off the first, to reduce them to 12 as at the commencement, before casting off. if second shape must be knitted exactly to correspond: the one across the chest, seen in the illustration, is optional; if used, it is 5 1/2 in. in length & firmly sewn across at a distance of 8 3/4 in from the front end of the braces.
