Monday, May 14th, 1883 Almost a repetition of yesterday- Thoroughly disagreeable, with cold rain and wind and black sticky mud underfoot. Up late; and, after breakfast, spent forenoon in office reading. After dinner got Ottoe's trunk and box of Law Books to the depot. Bid friends goodbye and left Le Mass on the 4 P.M. train. Was glad enough to get away for it is a hateful place. [Wm?] Cottrell, Wife, child and mother were on the train coming down. Took supper at Newell and reached Cedar Falls at 1.20 a.m. A dark gloomy night spent on the road. Tuesday, May 15th, 1883 Rode over to Burlington depot in the ['buss?] Came down to Cedar Rapids at sun up. Stopped off here and got miserable breakfast at Grand Hotel. Took slow accommodations train, and after a tedious run. reached Iowa City at 9.30 A.M. Came up to office and did some work. Home to dinner. Spent the afternoon at work in the office and at the Court House. After supper, walked about awhile, Then put on old clothes, and did the milking. Went to bed in a good season. Weather today bright and clear, but cool. A fine night. Wednesday, May 16th, 1883 A most beautiful spring day, bright and warm. Up at 7 o'clock came to office after breakfast and spent forenoon at work writing important business letters. Home to dinner. Spent the afternoon at work in the office, and at the Court House. Home to supper. Put on old clothes, and spent the evening at work fixing up fence N. of the old smoke house. Which we today and moved into the South West corner of the door. yard as an outside wood house. Hill and Kessner moved same for $10.50. Washed and put off underclothing tonight. A fine eve.
