Wednesday, May 23rd, 1883 Another fine day, but still cool, and beautiful moonlight night. Came to office and got to work on argument in the Supreme Court in case of Ottoe A. Byington vs Peter Quincy. Worked on this during the forenoon- Home to dinner. Completed my argument this afternoon and got the same into the hands of the printer-Got shave and home to supper. Helped plant potatoes for an hour. Then dressed very carefully and attended out Literary Club which met at Mrs. Gortons, was installed as President and presided over the exercises. Had an elegant time. Invited the club to meet at our house, on Wed. Eve. July 11th. Home at 11 P.M Thursday, May 24th, 1883 Weather cloudy with strong wind in S. Went to C.H. this morning and did some work for Bradstreet called on Hue McGovern and engaged to buy from him a new sett double buggy harness, at $35.00 he putting in [rolled?] lines and which. Spent forenoon in office at work writing letters, and cor-reading proof in Supreme Court argument in Quincy case- Home to dinner. This afternoon was devoted to a grand test of our water works. I witnessed nearly the entire test, talking place as per the accompanying programme. Also went down to the Engine house directly after dinner, and saw them run the engine at high speed- Wrote some important business letters and home to late supper, after seeing the final test at St. Mary's Church. Put on old clothes and finished planting potatoes- Also buried one of our hogs that died suddenly. Dressed carefully and attended Firemans Dance alone- Had a delightful waltz with Miss Walding. Home at midnight.
