Tuesday, June 5th, 1883 Reached Des Moines at 3 o'clock -skies clear. Took room at the "Morgan House" and slept til 8.30 o'clock. After breakfast I went over to the old State House, and attended the session of the Supreme Court in the old senate chamber. took dinner at the "Morgan" Spent the afternoon calling upon friends and visiting the Court Rooms [illegible]. Took tea with McCall's folks, and made call. Read awhile and to bed at the Morgan in good season. Weather rainy. At the Supreme Court, I submitted the case of Byington vs Quincy from Clarke District Court. Met [Messers?] Chaney and Temple from Osceola. Wednesday, June 6th, 1883 Today the greatest Democratic Convention ever help in Iowa met at Moore's Opera House in Des Moines, and placed in nominations a ticket of state officers. Up in good season and breakfasted at the "Morgan House" Went over to the New Capital Building and was kindly shown through the portions now being finished by Mr McCall. The Senate Chamber (now nearly completed) the Hall of Representatives, the Rotunda- Library and Committee rooms are all most elegantly constructed. Attended the morning session of the Sup, Ct. At 11 o'clock witnessed the organization of the convention- Ed Campbell, temporary chmen Took dinner with Ella McCall at the [Sabin?] H. Spent afternoon in the convention Hall [Pusry?] of Council Bluffs- presiding. L.G. [Kersne?] nominated for Gov. Judge Hayes for [Sect?] Judge Justis Clark for Lieut. Gov. Prof. Farr. [Sept?] Took tea with Jud Hamilton. Heard Mr Springer of Ill. a short time Attended theatre, and took midnight train for home. This has been a fine warm day.
