Thursday, October 4th, 1883 Weather threatening and began raining about 8 o'clock and has kept it up all day. Up early and got the carpenters started for the farm. Did chores. went over to the lumberyard and got on big load of framing timbers for the West Farm. Stopped at the blacksmith shop and left team to be shod. Spent forenoon at husking and hanging up seed corn. Worked and reading. Did chores early. A gloomy eve spent at home reading and meditating Friday, October 5th, 1883 A dismal, gloomy day drizzling and disagreeable. Did morning work. Then got to work on N. line of dooreyard fence. At 11 o'clock came to town and ordered some lumber for same. Lee and I spent the afternoon tightening the wires along that line. Dressed and intended to make a call at Gortons this eve but concluded that the weather was too bad. So stayed at home, and spent eve reading "Middle march" Saturday, October 6th, 1883 Clearing up this morning and has been a beautiful bright afternoon. Did morning work. Then got to work on the N. line of dooryard fence and Lee and I worked at it all the forenoon completing the work at noon and making a good job of it. Dressed and came to town after dinner. Spent afternoon at work in the office writing up accounts [illegible] Also did some running around. Paid masons in full =$16.25 Also paid for grass seed at Lewis'. Home and did the chores. Came over to the Opera House and listed to a rousing speech by Carter H. Harrison Mayor of Chicago. Home talked awhile and went to bed.
