Cloudy and cool this forenoon. Bright this afternoon. Threatening rain again tonight. Did morning work dressed and attended Mr Clutes half hour lecture. His subject was "Influence of modern literature on religion." and the talk was very entertaining. Home and read before and after dinner. At 4 o'clock I came over to town and made a pleasant call at Mrs Webb's. Engaged Ada for the theatre Tuesday Eve. Home and read till supper. AFter supper called for Lulu and we attended the Presbyterian Church Rev Folsom preached a sermon on the "Moral aspect of the present contest." Saw Lulu home and stopped awhile. Monday, October 8th, 1883 A bright fine day, rain tonight. Up early and did chores. Took load of framing timbers that I had left at the blacksmith [then?] out to the W.farm with young team. Roads slavish. After dinner came to town and spent entire afternoon going over judg. dockets with Mr Cannon and [Remley?] Over to town a short time after supper. Home and read.Tuesday, October 9th, 1883 Election Day! Weather pleasant until 5 P.M. then drizzling rain. Did shores and trimmed hedge till 10 o'clock. Rode down to the poll and cast my vote straight Democratic with one scratch. Rode over to the East side. Spent the afternoon at the voting place watching the balloting. Was candidate for trustee on the Democratic Ticket. Was opposed by A. Rowley Repub. and J.H. Clark -Independent. Wrote to Father after supper. Ada Webb and I attended the Theatre "Bunch of Keys" Fair- Heard returns at Press office till midnight- Am elected by good majority.
