Thursday, November 1st, 1883. A fine bright day. Attended at Court during morning hour and reinstated the docket case of Byington vs Lambert and H. J. [Yard?]. Spent forenoon at C.H. and running around. Met N. Saltzmun and rode out home with him. Went down and saw our 80 and talked with James Lewis our renter. Stayed all night at Saltzmun's. Today [Monet?] turned over $20 collected from the Lewis' on last years rent; keeping .60 cts. and allowing the Lewis about $19 for improvements in way of fixing fence. Also paid tax for 1882 on Dash 40 (NW NW 1-70-30) sold to Brackett cost of same $6.15. A fine eve. Friday, November 2d, 1883. Another bright and beautiful day, with strong warm wind in the S.W. Got early breakfast at Saltzman's and rode to town with him. Then walked out to the Sherrell place (4 mi) and took a look over the same. Had a splendid dinner at Sherell's and he brought me to town in the wagon. Collected from him $5 on amount due. Walked down to supper with Mr. Mount, but he was taken so violently ill that I excused myself, and got lunch up town. Brockett and I argued before the Judge at chambers the motive in the " Talley case". Decision adverse. I elected to dismiss the case. Wrote some letters. Saturday, November 3d, 1883, A beautiful day. Paid costs in Lamber, Thomas and Warner cases. Left Mt Ayr at 7.50 and reached Chariton at noon. Got shave. and took dinner at the Bates House. Called on acquaintances, and paid clerk $15.00 costs in Chas' cases. Took 4.50 train for Burlington. Telegraphing Chas to meet me. Got lunch at Ottumwa. Reached B. at 10 P.M. Walked up and roomed with Chas.
