Robt. W. Byington's Diary, Anno 1884. Tues. Jany 1st, 1884. A raging snow storm from the N.E. ushers in the New Year. The storm continues all day, and rages tonight. Up late and have been housed up all day doctoring cold and billious attack. Read in "Scottish Chiefs" played checkers and euchre. Spent long pleasant eve at home. Iowa and Ott attended the Reception of the "Knights of Pythias" at St James. I had invitation but could not attend. Wed. Jany 2d, 1884. A bitter cold day, with wind in N.W. and growing colder. In doors again all day doctoring and reading "Scottish Cheifs" Iowa and Geo. Corwine to valley in the cutter. Ott, Lee, and Arch down to Joe Walker's this eve to Leap Year party of "Dancing Club"- An awful trip for them. Spent eve pleasantly at home reading. Thurs. Jany 3d 1884. The coldest day of the season. The folks got home at 5 a.m. nearly frozen. Spent the day closely in doors doctoring and reading. Iowa and George returned this eve. Spent the eveing playing cards and reading. Finished part II of "Scottish Cheifs". Awful cold. Fri. Jany 4th 84. The coldest day we have had for years. At 7 o'clock 30' below zero. Gradually moderating during the day but still fearfull cold. Spent the day in doors doctoring for cold, and reading a little. Ott decides today to take a position as City Editor on "Kansas State Journal" at Topeka.
