Thurs. April 17th 1884 Continued Liberty. Reached Burlington at 8 P.M. Chas met us at the depot. We roomed at the Barrett House. Weather cold and raw at Iowa City, and quite a heavy rain at Wappello. To bed at 10 o'clock. Friday. April 18th, 1884. Heavy rain last night. Cloudy and threatening this A.M. but soon cleared up and has given us a fine warm day. Up at 5.30 and breakfasted at the depot hotel-$1.50- Left Burlington on the Excursion train to New Orleans at 7 o'clock. Took day coach to St Louis. Run over to Quincy and had slight accident here to the rear coach. Lunch at Hannibal. St Louis at 5.30 Had lunch. Engaged section in fine sleeper-$10.00- and left for New Orleans at 9 P.M. Sat. April 19th Awoke at Cain at 6 o'clock, where our train was ferried across the Ohio River. A damp gloomy morning. Run all day through a dilapidated, Rain and drizzle nearly all day. Sun. April 20th Awoke 70 miles out of New Orleans. From here run through magnificent forest & cenery. Saw roses in bloom and ripe wild strawberries. Reached New Orleans at 10 o'clock all OK. Secured a room at Mrs [Winniemore's?]- 246 Camp St- Walked down town. On way back saw the R.E. Lee monument Mr Phillips called
