Camp Morton Near Indianapolis May 9 1861 Mrs Sarah Davis Dear wife Again I take my pen in hand to address a few words to the loved ones at home. My writing table is not the back of a dead comrade but the head of a drum. I cannot give you any definite idea of the scenes that are at all times in a military camp. It is one continual hum of nois and as motley a Set of people as you ever Saw. A great many are genteel well dressed gentlemenly men, and then again there is a great many of the most abandoned dirty ragged lousyest looking mortals that you ever Saw and in comparison I would say you never Jim Garen look as hard in raggedest dress.
