In Camp at the foot of the Allegany mountains in Randolph Co. Va. July 15 1861 Mrs. Sarah Davis Dear beloved wife - After Several days sever toil and privations I am again enabled to devote a few moments to the dear ones at home. We are now encamped at the western base of the Allegany Mountains where we arrived Saturday last I wrote a letter to Newton on the 10th inst which you no doubt have read ere this. I will therefore resume from that point. On the morning of the 11th inst we left our tents and with 2 days provision in our haver sacks we Started on a forced march for Rich Mountain 21 miles distant where the Rebels ware strongly fortified and where there was a battle soon to come off. We marched the 21 miles nearly all the way in the rain and over the mountains and arrived at the encampment at 4 O Clock P.M. and when arrived there we found that the forces had been sent around to take position for the attact on the Rebels who
