Camp Elk Fork Randolph County Va. Aug 4th. 1861 Mrs Sarah Davis Dear Wife yours of the 28th directed to Buchannon came to hand yesterday the 3rd Inst. Also one from Ferman dated 23rd and one from Nancy dated 28th which ware all joyfully received and I now hasten to answer yours and will answer the other two in a day or two. I was truly glad to hear that you was all in good health & to hear that the children had got well again. I wrote you a letter a few days since which you no doubt have received before this time. I do not know of any thing new to write to you as it is the same monotonous camp life (like a womans work) the same thing over evry day. It is reported that some of the enemy are within a few miles of us but our Scouts do not appear to find them but we are kept on a constant & vigilant watch all the time and they will have to be sharp if they catch us
