Saving...
On the Battlefield near Pittsburgh landing Tennessee April 17th 1862 Mrs. Sarah Davis Dear Sally I am not dead as you see by this. and I am happy to say that I am in good health, hoping this will find you all the same. You no doubt think it a long while since I last wrote to you and I will tell you the cause On Sunday night the 6th inst we left our wagons and all of our baggage behind which never come up to us until today and I had no writing material consequently I could write no sooner. Well perhapse you would like to know what I know concerning the great Battle so I will commence at the first and give you the best description I can. Well as you know before this if you received the letter I wrote to you while on the march from Nashville. that we ware ordered South from that place. On Sunday morning the 6th inst which was the 9th day of our march we ware 35 miles from this place. and when we first awoke in the morning we heard the distant sound of Cannon but thought but little about it as we supposed it was only some of the Batterries in the vicinity practiceing but after we had gone some distance we met a Courier who told us that a heavy Battle was raging somewhere on the Tennessee River. This news caused us to hurry up a little faster but the roads ware bad our teams heavily loaded consequently we made but slow progress. At night we ware 22 miles from the Battle and we ware ordered to take 3 days rations of bread and meat
