Saving...
[In upper left margin:] 300 225 __ 200 100 __ 825 Louisville Ky. Sept 30th 1862 Mrs. Sarah Davis My Dear wife I am now Sitting in the open air with a pine board for a writing desk and candle badly bleared by the wind for a light, and under these circumstances I will endeaver to pen you a few lines. I am well and oh how glad I would be if could think that you was enjoying the Same blessing but such I know is not the case, for I have just returned from the Hotel where I saw, Anna & Jenny Bennett and they tell me that they Saw you day before yesterday and that you was Still quite poorly, but Said you was able to be up, a part of the time and that was some cumfort to me as it informs me that you are better than you was when you last wrote to me I received a letter today which you wrote Aug 31st 1862 just one month Since and I must Say that I am very much Surprised at some things which you Speak of in that. What most Surprises me is that Bud Thatcher should make and publish such an infernal and bearfaced lie as he told in regard to my drinking whiskey and I am also much Surprised that you would even for a moment believe it. All I have to Say is that I have not tasted Spirituous liquor as a bevrage for fifteen years. I do not take trouble and hardships to heart So much as to disgrace myself and family in that way. I cannot understand about the articles you had purchased for me. In one letter you State that you are going to forward them to Nashville the next day and in another you Say you have not sent them at all. I have watched the Express office closely for two days in hopes of getting them but so far have not got them. If you sent them the first of this month to Nashville they may have gone there, if So I will hardly ever see them.
