Saving...
but I will watch my chance close and make it as soon as I can, but I would rather Stay further south than here during the winter. I will have no chance of Sending this today so I will Stop writing until evening and I may get a letter between now and night. Well it is now night and no mail yet therefore I will have to finish without hearing from home. We have now heard that it is a mistake about our baggage comeing to us at this point but where we are going or when we know not but rumor Says we will leave here in a day or two and go to Glasscow which is near Mumfordville. The boys are generally very much discouraged with the idea of again going South. I presume that it is now generally conceeded that Buell has run the Rebs out of Kentuck but the boys who have been after Bragg since the 1st of Sept are not Satisfied with the way that he got out, and it is hard to convince them that it is all right, for they will grumble. Perhaps Buell has Some admirers among the officers of the Army and the citizens at home but he has but few if any among the ranks of the Army that was with him all summer. John Coombs from Roseburg of the 36 Regt was Killed at Wildcat the day we went up there. C.K. Burgess is getting along quite well now and is doing duty. Wm Sering says to say for him that he is in better health than he has for one year All the rest of the Union Co. Boys who are with us are well. My health is excellent. Six of our company who remained behind at Louisville are Still missing and will have to be mustered as deserters the last day of this month. None of them are from Union Co except A. H. Herbst of Brownsville. In 4 more days we will have 4 months pay due us but whether we will get it Soon or not remains to be seen. I have a chance of Sending this by a Chaplain who is going home in the morning. I expect to get Several letters from you before you will answer this. If any one asks why I do not write to them, Say that I say wait until we Stop running. Direct to Louisville My love to you and the girls Your Affectionate Husband A F. Davis
