The Rebs are very bold of late and harrass our lines more or less evry day. Yesterday they come close enough to throw shells into Johnson's camp but he soon drove them away. A reconnoitering party went out to a little town called Milton 12 miles northEast of here on Thursday and encamped and on Friday morning the Rebs attacted them with a heavy force of Cavalry but our men stood their ground manfully and fought them Several hours and at last drove them back. Our force consisted of one Brigade of Infantry and two pieces of Artilley and when the enemy began to retreat our men had not more then 2 rounds of Ammunition left to the man and only 3 shells for the cannon. Col. Ball was in command of our forces and sent in for reinforcements but before they arrived he had whipped the Rebs and driven them back and found 41 men and 5 officers dead and 138 wounded and had taken about 50 prisoners.
