(Added note at head of page:-) Jim Smith of Clarkshill was to see me yesterday he is a Capt in the 58 Ind and had his thumb shot off and a Slight wond in the neck, in sundays fight Chattanooga Tenn Sept. 28, 1863 Mrs. Sarah Davis My dear Wife Again I have the oportunity of writing to you and am glad to say I am alive & Well Hoping this will find yourself and our dear children the Same, We are Still Stationed at Chattanooga but our Regt. has changed camp Since I last wrote so we are now occupying the fortifications at the west edge of the town and have to guard two Bridges which are built over the Tennessee River at this place, Well I presume that you are anctiously awaiting to hear from me Something about the great Battle of the 19" & 20" inst but as I was not immediately in the fight I am unable to tell anything about it only by heresay and rumors And will say that through that Source once can hear anything he wishes as there is always one thousand and one rumors and camp Stories afloat after such transactions, You no doubt know long before this, by the Papers that our forces where overwhelmed by vastly superior numbers and ware obliged to fall back to this place. But notwithStanding the great Superior numbers of the enemy
