Vicksburg Aug 4th 1863, My Dear Mother, Since I wrote thee last we have come on to this city and their is every prospect of our staying here some time yet. We have a very pleasant camp just outisde the fortifications. The weather is very warm indeed - but I do not feel it in the least - as I stay in the tent all the time and do not go out in the sun to get heated up any. I've been in the city twice - it is too warm to go about much and Vicksburg looks just like any other city - aside from the fortifications and batteries. The holes in the hills into which the inhabitants used to retire when our troops shelled the city, are quite numerous and curious - they are
