dug out into rooms just like a house - have long halls and the rooms opening off them and the names of the occupants carved in the dirt over the door. The houses in the city are not nearly as much damaged by the shells as every one expected to find - indeed very few of the houses are not materially damaged at all. I called on Dr & Mrs Torry when I was in last week - they have taken a house there and are living very comfortably indeed. Several shells had passed through that house - one came in a front window in the parlor took the corner out of the Piano - passed through the lower panel of the parlor door - into the hall and passed out through the ceiling over the door at the other end of the hall - thus going through the full length of the house - it made some pretty big holes and the people thought it was time to leave - so they did go leaving all their
