Vicksburg Aug 17/63. My Dear Mother I had a letter two days since, dated Aug 7 still at Juneau. Why I have been sending to Makanda ever since the middle of July - thee wrote me thee was going the 3d. week in July so I directed my letters accordingly - I hope thee is there by this time, for if thee does not go soon then will be no time to make any sort of a visit with them. I had a long letter from Ell yesterday - she is up in the country among the Millers somewhere - up there where James Langstaff has his farm - they are all up there but Aunt it seems. She said Hez. lost his baby - that it was a sickly little (more at top of page upside down)
