I believe I told you in my last about Sergt Thomas of Co. "D.  he was Killed Instantly with one of our own shells Poor man we Gave him a Soldiers Burial which was all That we could do.  he was in command of the Co. and had he lived could have been 1st Leutenent. 
There has been Thirteen of our Field & Line Officers mustered out of the Service amongst Them Capt Gale. Col Parrott is now at home on Sick leave Lieut Morrison is still on Genl Rices Staff.  he Received a commission not Long since as Major in the 111 U.S. Col'd. Infantry but would not accept of it.  he sayes he is going home but it is my opinion That he will be Genl. Rices Adjutant Genl  Io. is a good officer I like him because he is brave for a coward I despise. 
Our Regiment is now commanded by Capt Jaml. Mahon who I presume will be our major. 
You ask about the probability of my being adjutant of the Regiment, No my dear I do not expect anything of the kinde you must remember that This is a veteran Regiment and as long as There is a Vet in the Regiment capable of filling an Office he will Get it in prefference to a recruit.  do not be too ambitious for me & office is not as easy got now as it was two years ago, but not assume I will accept the first good position that is offerd to me,  I could fill the Office of adjutant very well and If things work to suit me I will This fall Get a Recommendation from Genl Rice & Corse to Govenor Stone of Iowa for the appointment of adjutant in one of the new Regiments 
Genl Corse Recognized me one day on the field was very pleasant & Enquired very particularly for you.  you ask how we like Genl Draper.  he is Loved by both officers & men in his command if his Brother is as good a man Susy is doing well
