In The Field in front of Atlanta Ga August 24 64 My dear Wife, I Received Your Kinde and welcom letter of the 14" Last evening I was glad to hear from you again and know That you was well. I had learned through letters from Ft. M. that quite a number was sick and as your letters wer longer coming than usual I had began to git quite uneasy about you was afraid you was sick: I do hope you will continue to write as usual every week. I had also learned that Jonl. Eckhart was dead Poor fellow it seems that it was not intended he should Enjoy this world any longer I hope the change is for the better. truly death is visiting us all over this country There is not a day passes that I do not See men Killed or mortally wounded. one of our men was yesterday shot Through the head Just below The eyes and in front of the Ears he is still living but in dreadful agony.
