Saving...
speaking distance of the Rebs, we would have driven them back before This time had it not been for the little Ogeechee River That flowes between us and the Enemy. our men cannot cross it at This place on account of the Tide which Ebbs & flowes twice Every twenty four hours the Ebb & flow is fifteen feet. This Brigad tryed to effect a crossing Last night but could not succeed with safety to the men. there is several Rebel Batteries on the apposite side of the River which shell us every day. they are throwing shells while I write have just put one through a Large mill that stands near us & the mill is now on fire the shells came over so thick yesterday that Genl Sherman had to moove his Head Quarters which was within 1/2 mile of this Regimet, Communication is now open with the Gulf, & Ocean Steamers come up the Big Ogeechee River within three miles of us to unload Stores, we are about eight miles from Ossibaw Sound. The weather is fine it is more like April than December. The only difficulty That I finde is the heavy fog which amounts almost to a Rain Every morning. I must now close Give my Love to all Enquiring friends & Especialy mother & Mary Pleas write often my dear to Your Ever faithful husband Frank Malcom
