Office of Q.M. Department 4th Iowa Cavl Near Helena Ark April 1st/63 Father I drop you a few lines to let you know that I am still on the land and among the living - and feel truly thankfull to the giver of all good for his mercies to me - Asahel and John are boath well. Wm Scott is very sick in our hospital. I have but little or no news to write that would be of intrest to you the army is not the place to git news we git the papers every day but you git them as soon as we do - there is considerable camp rumor in regard to the diferent passes but I am giting tired of this pass and Cancell opperations I fear it will be one grand humbug and will amount to nothing but to prolong the war you may think it strange but I have not heard a sermon preached for four months our chaplain has been gon home and has just returned. he preached last sabbath but I was out with a scoutt chasing rebbles all day and did not heare him - he has been absent at least three fourths of the time since we came into the field
