Potosi Washington Co Mo Aug 27th Mr Sewart McDowell, Dear Sir You must not expect much of a letter from me this time for I have just come in from Picket Guard and am consequently tired and sleepy but as John is writing I will try. and put in a few lines edgeways. I am now writing in the Iowa House kept by a man named Crabb. He is a pretty good kind of fellow I guess but he dont keep much of a variety on his table. I'll be [foldadled?] if he aint feeding us on crackers that was left from the Mexican War, and you had they have'ent got any softer in their old age. We have been here
