861509 [Upside down at top of page:] I received three letters one J McD and of H C A the other J H Couther (answer soon as I get no news send Iowa papers Barnsvill. Sep 9th. 1861 I will write afew lines to send with the boys as they are going home this morning but they can tell all the news as it does not cost any thing to send I comenced to wite this to David but as I think I will go home my self I will sent it to you there has been very exciting times down here for two weeks on sabath week the cesi took 60 mules out of the camp or out on pasture about 2 miles of Fort Scott the cavelry started of them over took them but our boys retreated back to the hill in sight of the fort then they formed in line of battle the cesi came in three hundred yards of them and fired on them then retreated
