Meadville September 26th 1861 Mr John Mcdowel Dear Nephew it was with the most extreme pleasure that we received your kind letter it was a great surprise indeed; we heard that you were among the volunteers but of your whereabout was quite ignorant but your calling is a glorious one nothing can be more noble than to stand up in defene of the constitution and the stars and stripes of this land of freedom this war has brought grief and sorrow to many homes many of our noblest youth the flowers of the colleges the farmers the mechanics; clerks and even the Clergyman seem to be very patriotic and it does seem to me that it cannot be possible that the south will
