Saving...
our loss has been very great in the neighborhood of Richmond. My brotherinlaw John Walker was killed in the battle of fair oaks near Richmond on the last day of May. I hear often from brother Sam. some time ago he sent me word that Captain Crabb was released and gone home but I never heard any particulars: Tell me if he gave you any satisfactory account about your brother John. I think the Seventh seen some hard service since they went out, and they have lost so many, that I think they are only a handful compared with what they once were I suppose Iowa has responded to the call for more soldiers. there has not been one call, but two and although this county has a pretty large population, I think they will be well thinned They have called for six thousand men from this county. I could tell you many who have enlisted but you are not acquainted with them. You can tell Martha Jane Paul that John Hamilton is in camp where brother John is. I heard that Hamilton Shanon went some time ago.
