Keokuk Ia Aug 26th 27th 1863 Dear Ellen. I received your letter which I had looked for for some time It had been 3 days on the way. The mail being delayed one way or another accounts for your not getting my letters on time for I write as often as I get a letter from you & some times oftener & most always as soon as I get yours I think I am a letter ahead now but that matters not I was glad to receive your letter & learn that you was well & enjoying yourself so well I am doing verry well now. Feel pretty well for [me?] I am clerking at the Generrel House now Have been here 2 or 3 days dont know how long I shall stay am keeping the books for the Sergeant & may be here some time if I keep well enough If I do my chance for a furlough will be rather better I think. We are having verry warm weather & very little rain lately Nothing going on worth noting that I know of. There is to be a mass meeting at Ft Madison Junction on Saturday & I think some of trying to go up on the Cars
