the shore. but the French boats fish to a much greater distance the boats being subsidized by their Government, in order in all probability to make good sailors for the French Navy. a thick fog came over in the evening & lasted about an hour. The Captain of the "Rockingham" a ship destroyed by the Alabama & who was aboard of her for 50 days say she carried 8 guns & the Kearsage 7. her tonnage was over 1100 & the Kearsage some 70 tons under he allows the Kearsage had 2 guns which fired heavy shells but conclude that one the whole they were about as equal a match as could be found, he seems a quiet man & says he is willing to make his statement to anyone.
